Already in 2017, the Wikimedia Movement launched the global, collaborative process of drafting the Movement Strategy 2030. Its direction states that Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the free knowledge ecosystem. Two main goals guide the strategic direction: knowledge equity, focusing on knowledges and communities that were left out of the movement by structures of power and privilege; and knowledge as a service, to ensure that Wikimedia becomes a platform that serves knowledge in various formats and builds tools for allies. Between 2018 and 2020, the Wikimedia Movement defined the principles of the Movement Strategy and developed a set of ten recommendations to modify the Movement's structures and achieve the strategic direction. Initiatives were established for each recommendation. As of 2020, the Movement Strategy 2030 has entered the implementation phase. The expectation is that affiliates, the Wikimedia Foundation, and other stakeholders will incorporate the recommendations into their practices.
